"1821 Revolution against all slavery"

Sculpture exhibition with 72 sculptures by 42 artists

at the "Serafio" of the Municipality of Athens

Opening: Wednesday 16 March 2022 at 19:00 p.m.

The Municipality of Athens and the Association of Sculptors of Greece co-organize a thematic sculpture exhibition with the participation of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Liberation Struggle entitled: "1821 Revolution against all slavery" and invite you to the opening on Wednesday 16 March 2022 at 19:00.

From March 16 to April 10, at the "Serafio" of the Municipality of Athens, Piraeus and Petrou Ralli, 72 sculptures by 42 artists are presented, including artists as George Zongolopoulos, Georgiadis Georgios, Rokos Kyriakos, Yiannis Pappas, Kalakallas Georgios, Doropoulos Vassilios among others.

These artists with their art praise the sacred struggle of our ancestors, highlight the forms of the fighters who starred, who were sacrificed and magnified, but also the ideals from which they were inspired.

This anniversary exhibition for the 200 years since the beginning of the Revolution pays tribute to the heroes of 1821 and at the same time reminds all of us what we owe to all those who gave their lives for the salvation of the nation and independence, after 400 years of slavery.

The artworks were created on the occasion of the exhibition, following a relevant invitation from the Association of Sculptors of Greece, while others are models from the participation of sculptures in the occasionally announced pan-Hellenic public competitions.

The Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyiannis, stated: “The Municipality of Athens, by actively supporting the field of culture, gives a step to the artists, who are one of the sectors that experienced the pandemic in a very hard way. We gladly collaborated for the realization of this exhibition and we welcome to our premises the sculptors who responded to the invitation of the Association of Sculptors of Greece, to make the citizens and visitors of Athens share their work. With this exhibition, we are keeping alive a cornerstone of our history, and we realize that what we now take for granted, such as freedom, democracy and the rule of law, is the result of the struggles, blood and sacrifices of our ancestors."
