]]> The Umbrellas of Zongolopoulos have returned to the New Waterfront of Thessaloniki, renewed, illuminated, and ready to embrace the city’s sea horizon once again.
Behind this return are people who did not see merely a sculpture, but a piece of the soul of Thessaloniki.

A heartfelt, sincere “thank you” from President Nikos Theodoridis and the Board of Directors of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation:

➡️ To the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which substantially supported the entire process with consistency and respect for the work. Especially to Mayor Stelios Angeloudis and Deputy Mayor Prodromos Nikiforidis, for their personal care and excellent coordination at every stage of the project. Their collaboration was not merely formal—it was meaningful, and the results speak for themselves.

➡️ To Andreas Evangelatos, the person who not only repaired the Umbrellas, but stood for hours in the rain, high up in the cherry picker, with risk and effort, to install one by one the umbrellas and the “rains” of the work.
The image of him—balancing upright on the basket of the cherry picker to reach 12 m in height at the most difficult point of the work—is in itself a monument of love and respect from the craftsman to the artist and his creation.

Today the Umbrellas stand again by the sea, with Mount Olympus in the background at the spot chosen by their creator, more complete than ever.

Is it possible??? And yet it is!!!!

The ultra-patriots of the Municipality of Preveza are destroying the monument of modern cultural heritage, “The Dance of Zalongo” by the late artist George Zongolopoulos, by NAILING national emblems and small flags into the joints of the work.

The Ministry of Culture and the Region consistently maintain the monument at cost, as it is a unique landmark in the area, yet the Municipality vandalizes it.

Notably, in 2013, when extensive repair and conservation of the monument took place, one of the main tasks was the jointing of the work with special materials by specialized archaeologist conservators from the University of Athens.

This is because, in the event of rainfall, water can seep into the joints and corrode the monument’s structural materials, including cement and iron.

Who could teach these foolish vandals that protecting monuments requires only common sense and respect, not a narcissistic display of patriotism by posting national emblems and flags?

The artist designed the monument to speak for itself and to be visible from kilometers away; it does not need the addition of emblems and flags that are only visible to those who placed them.

Immediate removal of the emblems and flags is necessary, as well as repair of the damage with specialized materials.

As for those foolish enough to have had the bright idea of placing the national emblems, at the very least they deserve a reprimand from the Ministry of Culture, which spends Greek public funds on the monument’s maintenance.
