The Georgios Zongolopoulos Foundation, on November 25, 2021, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, participated in the global campaign of\u00a0UNESCO \u201cOrange the World\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0lighting up for the first time in orange the iconic monument\u00a0\u201cThe Dance of Zalongo\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in collaboration with the Municipality of Preveza.<\/div>\n

We are all witnesses to a series of gender-based violence issues, which unfortunately have escalated tremendously in recent years.
Raising awareness and the ongoing fight to eliminate this phenomenon is a continuous effort by every public and private initiative with the common goal of Eliminating Violence Against Women, both nationally and globally.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
With the support of\u00a0the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Service of Modern Monuments & Technical Works of Epirus<\/strong>, the\u00a0Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the General Secretariat for Public Diplomacy & Greek Diaspora<\/strong>, the\u00a0Region of Epirus and the Regional Unit of Preveza<\/strong>, the\u00a0the Municipality of Preveza,<\/strong>, the\u00a0the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece<\/strong>, the\u00a0the Ministry of Tourism,<\/strong>\u00a0the Greek National Tourism Organization,\u00a0<\/strong>and numerous friends, the\u00a0George Zongolopoulos Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0is actively promoting through an international awareness campaign the designation of\u00a0the Modern Cultural Heritage Monument of Greece<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThe Dance of Zalongo\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as an\u00a0International Landmark<\/strong>\u00a0for the\u00a0Elimination of Violence Against Women\u00a0<\/strong>within the framework of\u00a0UNESCO principles.<\/strong>.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Sixty-three Souliot women, chased and trapped on the edge of a cliff, faced with the threat of rape and captivity, chose death as their only escape.\u00a0This is the first recorded act of self-determination and collective female resistance to violence\u00a0<\/strong>in world history.
The monument is\u00a0a masterpiece of art and engineering,\u00a0<\/strong>colossal in size\u00a018 meters long and 15 meters high,<\/strong>visible from\u00a035 kilometers away.<\/strong>.
The collective decision of the women to resist violence in this way, along with the monument\u2019s unique thematic, formal, and technical characteristics, make the sacred place of Zalongo and the monument itself a unique\u00a0Global Point of Reference and Symbol\u00a0<\/strong>for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
