Inauguration of Omonia Square in Athens and the ''Five Circles''15.05.2020

The Omonia Square in Athens was inaugurated yesterday, regaining a fountain, an element that had defined it for more than 30 years. In the renewed square, the presence of George Zongolopoulos continues to be intense with the emblematic hydrokinetic sculpture "Five Circles" which he created at the age of 100!

"Water is the blood of my sculptures"

The magnificent sculpture, one of its kind, was created in 2001, is 15 meters high and is made of stainless steel. It was first presented at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and the same year it was installed in Omonia Square.
Water, "the blood of his sculptures", as George Zongolopoulos used to say, is the element that keeps this metal work moving which impresses the spectators, since it seems like it lives with us every moment of the day, in running and in the rush but also in the walk and the enjoyment of the city center.

The movement of the sculpture

The "Five Circles" comes to life again with an exclusive donation from the Onassis Foundation in the framework of the joint initiative with the Municipality of Athens "Art in the public space" and with the cooperation of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, which maintained, restored and put into a complete hydrokinetic operation the "Five Circles", a unique work of art - a symbol for the historic square of the center of Athens.
Zongolopoulos has always supported the importance and the need to upgrade the public space to improve the quality of everyday life and human life, which is why he was primarily concerned with it throughout his life.
