UMBRELLAS
THE EMBLEMATIC SCULPTURE CREATED BY GEORGE ZONGOLOPOULOS
PLACED AT EGYPTIAN BEACH
The George Zongolopoulos Foundation installs George Zongolopoulos' sculpture "Umbrellas" on an Egyptian beach.
The working group headed by the President of the Foundation, Mr. Nicos Theodoridis, and the General Director, Mr. Angelos Moretis, is these days in Egypt having already begun the installation and integration process of the project to the surroundings.
The "Umbrellas" of George Zongolopoulos is a reference point for modern art in Greece, being one of the most photographed sculptures around the world.
The exceptionally successful installation of the sculpture in the city of Thessaloniki in 1997 by George Zongolopoulos made the artwork directly dear to the citizens and visitors of the city and is considered a model of landscape installation art in the public space as the artwork is harmoniously integrated into the horizon offering an excellent viewing perspective.
George Zongolopoulos presented his works in Egypt in 1946, participating in the Cairo Biennale. Today, 72 years later, steel umbrellas with ethereal domes are continuing the dialogue of Egyptian and Greek culture and to enhance Greek-Egyptian friendship as a contemporary art sculpture that dominates both countries.
