It had been a long-standing desire to install a work by the internationally acclaimed artist in the city.
The iconic sculpture "Umbrella" by George Zongolopoulos was installed in Trikala in 2022, following a collaboration between the Municipality of Trikala and the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, and was inaugurated on Friday, November 11, 2022.
There had been a longstanding desire to install a work by the pioneering and internationally acclaimed Greek sculptor. Georgios Zongolopoulos, in the city of Trikala, as the modernism of the artist's work aligns with the philosophy of the Thessalian city, which stands as a model of innovation for all of Greece and Europe.
The sculpture "Umbrella" It was created in 1990 and presented at the Venice Biennale in 1993. The umbrella, which has become the artist's most recognizable visual expression, is a familiar object across the world that is transformed into a sculptural symbol, sparking human imagination.
The decision to publicly install the artwork at this scale for the first time falls within the Foundation's statutory purposes. The Foundation is the sole institution responsible for preserving the work of George Zongolopoulos and the legal holder of the artist’s intellectual property rights.
