Untitled II. Greek Postwar Abstraction: The Heroic Years
Alex Mylona Museum
Opening: Friday, June 7, 20:00
The history of abstraction in Greece is captured in the new exhibition produced by MOMus – Museum of Contemporary Art, presented at MOMus – Alex Mylona Museum.
The exhibition focuses on the years marking the emergence and gradual establishment of abstraction in Greek art, from the 1950s to the mid-1960s, a period during which it went through many stages, faced criticism, controversy, and rejection, assumed various forms, yet survived and later underwent multiple renewals. Through the works of 26 painters and sculptors, among the most important representatives of contemporary art in the country, the exhibition traces the fascinating history of an artistic movement, deeply marked by those who served it or opposed it.
“As the curators note in their introductory text, abstract painting and sculpture of the first and second postwar decades become the essential core that defines a new direction in the Greek context,” Thouli Misirloglou and Giannis Bolis.
The exhibition “Untitled II. Greek Postwar Abstraction: The Heroic Years” at MOMus – Alex Mylona Museum includes works from MOMus collections, but mainly loans from significant institutions, such as the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the Alpha Bank, the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, private collections, and archival material from the Institute of Contemporary Greek Art – iset.
