For the first time, the work George Zongolopoulos is presented in the natural setting of an educational institution, at Athens College, in an original exhibition titled“EDUCATION FOR LIFE.” The opening will take place on Wednesday, May 31, with an outdoor presentation of sculptures by the great Greek artist. Subsequently, in September, the exhibition will expand to the indoor space of the Athens College Theater, forming a complex narrative of the artist’s career.
This initiative was realized following the visit of the President the Athens College,, Professor Kostas Synolakisto Giorgos Zongolopoulos’ residence in Psychiko, where together with the President of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation (artist’s nephew) Nikos Theodoridis they envisioned a museum-standard exhibition at the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation – Athens College, aiming to introduce students and visitors of the historic school directly to the creator who left his mark on Greece’s public space throughout the 20thου .
The perspective and goal of the exhibition, according to Professor Kostas Synolakis, is for students to approachArt holistically through its diversity. The work of G. Zongolopoulos, across eighty years of uninterrupted creativity, shows a continuous spirit of renewal, is closely connected to public space, features pioneering monumental installations both in Greece and abroad, and through his inventiveness sparks the curiosity of the youth.
The sculptor’s nephew, Nikos Theodoridis, supporting Professor Kostas Synolakis’ vision, sought to activate this proposal immediately. Thus, for the first time in a school setting, an outdoor exhibition of iconic sculptures by G. Zongolopoulos was created, curated by Archaeologist and Art Historian Iris Kritikou. Original musical compositions by Composer Giorgos Voukanos will accompany each sculpture individually.
