The iconic umbrellas of Giorgos Zongolopoulos at Skouras Estate

The emblematic sculpture by Giorgos Zongolopoulos, "The Four Seasons", was acquired at auction by the Skouras couple a few years ago and has since become a beloved piece in their significant private collection.

Wishing to recreate this sculpture artistically—under the supervision of the Foundation—in a larger scale so that it could serve as a landmark for their estate in Nemea, Mr. Giorgos Skouras contacted the Giorgios Zongolopoulos Foundation.

The sculpture was reconstructed by the artistic workshop of Leonidas & Stelios Gikas, a studio that has fabricated numerous works by Zongolopoulos during his lifetime. At the beginning of last summer, the work was installed at the Skouras Estate, and it has since become a landmark of the winery.

Presentation

As part of the first event and inauguration of the sculpture’s installation, Iris Kritikou, art historian and collaborator of the Giorgios Zongolopoulos Foundation, Iris Kritikou, art historian and collaborator of the Giorgios Zongolopoulos Foundation, will present the artwork and speak about the artist.

The sculpture consists of four umbrellas, the most recognizable motif of Giorgos Zongolopoulos. These umbrellas are painted in different colors to symbolize both the four seasons of the year and, allegorically, the four stages of human life (childhood, adolescence, adulthood, old age).

"The Four Seasons" is the first sculpture in which Giorgos Zongolopoulos used color on his perforated steel umbrellas, a technique he introduced in 1993 when he presented the work at the Venice Biennale.

The second time Zongolopoulos used color on his umbrellas was in the 25-meter-high installation "Atrium" located in Syntagma Square.
