We have the joy and the honor to host on Sunday March 8, 12:00, at our established monthly guided tours, Mr. Evangelos Gazis Professor of Experimental Particle Physics, National Technical University of Athens and at CERN.

The activities of the CERN center, beyond strictly scientific research, also influence the creation of art in all its forms—Painting, sculpture, poetry, cinema, etc.—inspired by the center’s activities. Such as, for example, the film Angels and Demons (Illuminati), part of which was filmed on the premises of CERN. George Zongolopoulos, wishing to incorporate movement into his works through water, air, light, electricity, engaged with the natural sciences, and thus CERN touches upon his work, particularly in the piece “Void and Sphere,” which one could consider to be inspired by the Bing Bang, that is, the Big Bang that created the world.

…took place, and despite the rainy weather, it gave us two hours of sun and blue skies.
The garden, the house, and all the spaces were filled with warmth, smiles, and love for art.

We would like to thank you all for your presence, which gives real meaning to our activities!
Professor of Art History at the University of Patras, Mr. Alexandros Teneketzis, spoke about the work of George Zongolopoulos and its relation to political events in Greece, Europe, and around the world.

]]> The Umbrellas of Zongolopoulos have returned to the New Waterfront of Thessaloniki, renewed, illuminated, and ready to embrace the city’s sea horizon once again.
Behind this return are people who did not see merely a sculpture, but a piece of the soul of Thessaloniki.

A heartfelt, sincere “thank you” from President Nikos Theodoridis and the Board of Directors of the George Zongolopoulos Foundation:

➡️ To the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which substantially supported the entire process with consistency and respect for the work. Especially to Mayor Stelios Angeloudis and Deputy Mayor Prodromos Nikiforidis, for their personal care and excellent coordination at every stage of the project. Their collaboration was not merely formal—it was meaningful, and the results speak for themselves.

➡️ To Andreas Evangelatos, the person who not only repaired the Umbrellas, but stood for hours in the rain, high up in the cherry picker, with risk and effort, to install one by one the umbrellas and the “rains” of the work.
The image of him—balancing upright on the basket of the cherry picker to reach 12 m in height at the most difficult point of the work—is in itself a monument of love and respect from the craftsman to the artist and his creation.

Today the Umbrellas stand again by the sea, with Mount Olympus in the background at the spot chosen by their creator, more complete than ever.

The flame welcomed the people of Thessaloniki with brilliance, symbolically reinforcing the values of Olympism, peace, unity, and cultural identity.

For us, as the Zongolopoulos Foundation, this moment is especially honorable — as the Umbrellas are not merely a public artwork, but part of the life of the city and the collective memory of its citizens. The visit of the Olympic Flame highlights the cultural and symbolic significance of public space and reminds us that art and sport have the power to bring people and communities together.

Is it possible??? And yet it is!!!!

The ultra-patriots of the Municipality of Preveza are destroying the monument of modern cultural heritage, “The Dance of Zalongo” by the late artist George Zongolopoulos, by NAILING national emblems and small flags into the joints of the work.

The Ministry of Culture and the Region consistently maintain the monument at cost, as it is a unique landmark in the area, yet the Municipality vandalizes it.

Notably, in 2013, when extensive repair and conservation of the monument took place, one of the main tasks was the jointing of the work with special materials by specialized archaeologist conservators from the University of Athens.

This is because, in the event of rainfall, water can seep into the joints and corrode the monument’s structural materials, including cement and iron.

Who could teach these foolish vandals that protecting monuments requires only common sense and respect, not a narcissistic display of patriotism by posting national emblems and flags?

The artist designed the monument to speak for itself and to be visible from kilometers away; it does not need the addition of emblems and flags that are only visible to those who placed them.

Immediate removal of the emblems and flags is necessary, as well as repair of the damage with specialized materials.

As for those foolish enough to have had the bright idea of placing the national emblems, at the very least they deserve a reprimand from the Ministry of Culture, which spends Greek public funds on the monument’s maintenance.

George Zongolopoulos – The Man Who United Art with the City

Following the recent article on in2life titled “Zongolopoulos Was the Man Who Put Art Where It Belongs: Outside, in the Street,”we invite you to once again share the thought and vision of an artist who believed that art should not be confined within walls but should breathe in outdoor spaces.

Through his sculptural compositions — the Umbrellas, Poseidon, Cor-Ten, and other emblematic works — he created a dialogue between form and the city, between art and the citizen. The Foundation and the Outdoor Sculpture Collection in Palaio Psychiko are the places where this vision continues to live, where visitors can wander among works that converse with nature, time, and humanity.

We also inform you that:

  • The exhibition "Unity and Multiplicity" at Sianti Gallery will run until November 8th.
  • On the first Sunday of every month the George Zongolopoulos Foundation offers free guided tours.
  • The Foundation actively participates in educational and experiential programs for schools and adults.

We invite you to walk among the works, listen to their silence and form, and reshape your relationship with art as an integral part of the city.
